Michael Vick and Catfighting Rings

Dogs, cats, and former NFL star Michael Vick make up two threads of news in today’s cycle.

About cats and dogs, there is word today that dog-lovers tend to report a current preference for John McCain and that cat-lovers tend to report a current preference for Barack Obama.

About Michael Vick, the former NFL quarterback is getting attention because he’s filed for bankruptcy protection after the various troubles he’s encountered because of his dog-fighting activities.

The connection that we find with these stories… involves a question that we’ve been thinking about for a while… which is…

Why is it that people (like Michael Vick, apparently) get so excited by dogs fighting… but… it seems like the only instances when we hear about “cat fights,” it’s a figurative rather than literal reference (i.e., it’s about human females “fighting” rather than non-human [male and female] felines).

Don’t get us wrong. We’re not advocating that people start trying to pit cats versus cats. Instead, we’re just somewhat puzzled by the way in which people seem to treat the two animals very similarly in many respects (e.g., as coddled pets)… and yet very differently in at least one respect.
