Obama Endorses Competitive Eating

No, we’re not talking about any ill-conceived short-term plan for economic recovery.

No, we’re talking about the would-be President’s recent appearance on Philadelphia’s sports-talk giant, WIP 610 AM.

Yes, this is the same program where Senator Obama has drawn heat for making an informal reference to the way that “a typical white person” responds in certain situations. Like the “white” hosts of the program, we’re not bothered by his comments though we trust that he will avoid the phrase in the future.

Instead, we think it’s strikingly smart that Obama gained prime airtime in the City of Brotherly Love (home to an upcoming primary) to reach out precisely to the “demographics” that pollsters claim that he needs to reach more successfully (e.g., “white males who have not gone to college”).

One thing that’s been lost in the fake controversy over his phraseology is that WIP 610’s morning show, which hosted the Senator, is very popular with a broad cross-section of the region.

In fact, they are the people who created the increasingly famous “Wing Bowl” that fills the same stadium where the Sixers and Flyers play… for a competitive-eating event each winter.

The WIP 610 morning show is also a regular venue for Senator Arlen Specter… to make news on subjects such as his investigation into the Patriots’ alleged “SpyGate” activities. Likewise, PhillyFan and former Mayor Ed Rendell is a semi-regular guest of the show even now that he’s the Governor of Pennsylvania.

Who knew sports-talk radio attracted such dialogue?

Of course, just as it’s a boon for Obama to be hosted very nicely by the WIP 610 morning show, it’s also certainly boosts the legitimacy of the Wing Bowlers.

… Oh, and did we mention the Wing Bowl’s widespread patronage of strippers?

We suppose that if it weren’t for the regular participation of Specter and (Clinton-supporter) Ed Rendell… we might see headlines like “Obama linked to strippers.”
