Pea Eating Contest, Anyone?

So, the 4th of July has come and gone… and another “Nathan’s” Hot Dog eating contest is in the record books — as well as the ESPN video archives.

We have trouble imaging why — or how — anyone would eat the hot dogs that are required to win these contests.

We started to wonder, though: why do all of the eating contests seem to use meat?

According to “Major League Eating” (yep, we didn’t make that up)… there are multiple, sanctioned contests involving hot dogs and ribs.

And of course, there are other contests like the famous “Wing Bowl” that’s hosted each year in Philadelphia by the talk-radio station 610 WIP that use chicken wings.

What would an eating contest with vegetables look like, though?

Would it attract a different demographic of competitors?

Would there be lots of gas in the vicinity afterwards?

Personally, now that we’re in summer and fruit is cheap… we imagine that peach-eating contests as well as cherry-eating events would be among those that would be popular.

And, each of these major “crops” have industry-wide promotional groups that could front the modest number of dollars that would be needed for this kind of stunt, or, eh, promotion.
